29 August 2024Program, Participation, and Qualification: Everything You Need to Know About the 2024 UCI Mountain Bike Enduro and E-enduro World Championships
New details about the much-anticipated 2024 UCI Mountain Bike Enduro and E-enduro World Championships have been revealed, including the event program. The best mountain bike athletes from around the world will compete in Italy’s Dolomites – in Val di Fassa, Trentino – for the UCI World Champion title and the first rainbow jerseys in the discipline.
The UCI Mountain Bike Enduro and E-enduro World Championships will officially begin on Thursday, September 12 with the Opening Ceremony and the Parade of National Athletes that will take place through the streets of Canazei.
The official practice on the racecourse will take place on Friday, September 13, and the Enduro and E-enduro races are scheduled for Saturday, September 14.
On Sunday, September 15, the public and enthusiasts will have the opportunity to participate in the “Ride Test & Explore” day, during which it will be possible to visit the paddocks, meet the athletes for autographs, and ride on the still marked racetrack!
HOW DO ATHLETES QUALIFY?
In addition to the program, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has announced the qualification criterion for the selection of the national athletes in both the Enduro and E-Enduro disciplines.
- The competitions will be open to athletes born from 2007 and earlier.
- National Federations can enter 5 men and 5 women.
- Additionally, the top 30 men and top 15 women of each round of the UCI Enduro World Cup as well as the top 100 men and top 50 women of the Enduro overall rankings obtain qualification for the UCI Enduro & E-enduro World Championships.
Athletes must wear the official uniform of their National Federation, thus respecting the pride and identity of their country.
The starting order will be determined by the general Enduro ranking, with the top athletes starting last, creating a crescendo of emotions and suspense. Unranked athletes will follow a rotating starting order by nation, ensuring fair and organized competition.
VAL DI FASSA, TRENTINO, ITALY: A PROUD HOST OF A HISTORIC FIRST
Massimo Ghirotto, President of the Off-Road Commission of the Italian Cycling Federation (FCI), comments: “In Italy, enduro started in 2009 with the Superenduro Series, and by 2011 the first National Championship in the discipline was organized in Limone Piemonte. Since then, the discipline has come a long way, but we are still at the forefront and happy that Italy is once again hosting a historic first with the upcoming UCI Mountain Bike Enduro and E-enduro World Championships. This event should be a source of pride for all athletes, the organizers, and the community that has invested heavily in the sport and this discipline over the years. Val di Fassa and Trentino, with their beautiful Dolomites, are a perfect setting for this event. I extend my best wishes to William Basilico and the entire staff for what I am sure will be an unforgettable event.”
The FCI has recently appointed the current National Downhill Team Coach, Simone Fabbri, as the Technical Commissioner for the Enduro and E-enduro disciplines. Reached by phone, he shared some interesting information about the state of preparations and his vision.
He is currently in a research phase, reviewing all available information such as rankings, results in WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series events, and other relevant data, while also being in contact with some athletes. In the E-enduro format, he identifies the need for a high level of specialization, noting that “a modern power stage, which is an increasingly decisive special test in races, is not for everyone; it requires experience and highly refined riding techniques.” However, for enduro, he sees it as entirely possible to consider athletes from downhill, as long as they are motivated and well-rounded in both athletic and technical aspects.
Regarding an Italian national team retreat before the event, Fabbri confirmed the possibility, and added: “It is essential to create a group; great things are achieved together! Although the disciplines I deal with are individual, I have always believed in the value of the team and the benefits that sharing and harmony bring to results.“
We will know the names of the selected Italian athletes on August 28, when registrations open.
The event promises to be an unmissable appointment for all mountain bike enduro enthusiasts, with four intense days showcasing the talent and determination of the participating athletes. The invitation is out for all enthusiasts and media to come to Val di Fassa to follow the 2024 Mountain Bike Enduro and E-enduro World Championships closely and applaud the first UCI World Champions in the history of both mountain bike formats.
